For over 30 years, Dr. Birmaher has been dedicated to the assessment, treatment, and research of youth with diverse psychiatric disorders. However, his research has mainly focused on the phenomenological, biological, longitudinal course and pharmacological and psychosocial treatment studies of youth with depression, bipolar and anxiety disorders. He has authored or co-authored more than 400 publications and has been involved in multiple grants as Principal Investigator (PI) or Co-PI. Dr. Birmaher joined the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Pittsburgh as a full-time faculty member in July 1988 to work in mood disorders. Since then, in addition to his clinical and teaching responsibilities, he has built a team of junior investigators who work with him in research in mood and anxiety disorders. Dr. Birmaher has been instrumental in helping these junior investigators develop their careers as researchers; he has also been working successfully with investigators and institutions across the USA and internationally.
